All mother's are grateful but never more grateful than Irving High School Forensics Teacher - Vikki Rose. Vikki knew that there were heart problems in her family and had dreaded the day that they may show up - especially in her children. With her husband suffering from a heart attack several years ago - she knew it was time to take the plunge and find out.
Vikki Rose was informed of the Living for Zachary Heart Screening Forum that was held on February 17th - the night before the big Living for Zachary HeartBeats Gala so she decided to register her 18 year old son, Garrett Rose for the heart screening. She knew that with Garrett being so involved in Pole Vaulting that it was imperative to keep up with his health, especially since he would be attending Sam Houston State University in the Fall on a Track and Field Scholarship. She wanted to know if there was any underlying heart problems before sending him off on his new journey. With Garrett's father's history and his grandfather dying from a heart attack she wanted to have peace of mind so it was time to take the plunge and what better way that to get a Living for Zachary Heart Screening.
Vikki was so impressed with the process of the Living for Zachary Forum and how it was run - "I think that this is the best thing for all student's - whether or not they are in sports or not". "I wish all student's could have this done and would love for the heart screening to be something that a student HAS to have before participating in sports".
Of course, Garrett wasn't worried (not many kid's think that it can happen to them) so he was just excited to hear the good news. Last week a letter came in the mail stating that Garrett's heart was good and strong and working well. With Garrett's struggles over the years with his Dyslexia - she wanted a heart issue to be something that they conquered early on. With Garrett being the 2012 recipient of the Jack Singley award for the Irving Schools Foundation - getting a clean bill of health just gave Mother, Vikki Rose the peace that she needed to send Garrett off feeling nothing but peace and appreciation in her heart.
"Thank you Living for Zachary for giving me one less thing to worry about as a parent."
