Don't be a Bystander - be a Lifesaver

The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation will celebrate the annual awards reception; "Won’t You Be My Neighbor?...Won’t You Learn How to Save a Life"? which will take place today October 7th, 5:30-7:30 PM, at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event will celebrate the survivors of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the neighborly rescuers whose quick and courageous actions made the difference between life and death.

As a special bonus Mr. David Newell (Mr. McFeeley from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood) will make a guest appearance, and talk about the need for quick responses of CPR and every neighbor’s role in using Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) when SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) occurs.

The moral of this story and event is know CPR and know how to respond if Sudden Cardiac Arrest should strike around you. Will you know what to do or how to respond if someone should collapse around you?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies. You can use CPR during a heart attack, near drowning or at a time that someone has stopped breathing or their heartbeat has ceased to beat. CPR involves two parts: chest compressions combined with mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing.

When performing CPR remember the ABC's:
  • Airway: Clear the airway
  • Breathing: Breathe for the person
  • Circulation: Restore blood circulation with chest compressions
When learning CPR - make sure that you learn from a accredited organization like the American Red Cross or American Heart Association or find a CPR Trained Instructor in your area.
The Living for Zachary Foundation asks you to be a Lifesaver not a Bystander and make a difference in saving a life.

If you would like to be a part of making people aware of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in our young people; please attend one of our Living for Zachary's upcoming events or just DONATE to Living for Zachary; and be a good neighbor.

Seconds do count when Sudden Cardiac Arrest hits

More and more people are finding out more about heart issues and Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Many times when people realize what is going on, it's too late. Knowing the difference between SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) and a Heart attack can save your life!

With SCA (sudden cardiac arrest) there are problems with the heart's "electrical system." The heart's lower ventricles develop a rapid and irregular rhythm which makes the ventricles quiver instead of contract (like normal). This heart quivering makes the heart ineffective in pumping and can no longer supply the body and brain with oxygen; thus causing the person to lose consciousness and a pulse. Immediate CPR or using a AED can prevent death in a SCA patient... but the chances of survival decrease 10% every minute without a AED. The American Heart Association recommends using a AED or performing CPR within 5 minutes of collapse.

A heart attack is the result of one or more arteries that are blocked (many times by plaque) so they can no longer pump blood. The oxygen in the blood cannot reach the heart so the heart becomes damaged. It is more like a "plumbing problem" and is most of the time survivable.

Obviously SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) is very serious and possibly can be avoided. It is imperative to know your family history and your genetics. When you take your child to the Doctor, ask LOTS of question and check into cardiac screening at your health care facility. Investigate at your child's school; if the facility has a AED and is the staff trained in using the AED and CPR.

According to KHOU in Houston, TX more than 120 sixth grade children at Hogg Middle School in Houston, TX received heart screening; ultrasounds and electrocardiogram tests as a, on-going program to reduce Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth.

Make a difference before it's too late, donate to Living for Zachary and help raise awareness of SCA, Sudden Cardiac Arrest!
