Busy Week for Living for Zachary - it's time for Parent's to LISTEN!

Living for Zachary continues to push for knowledge and awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in our youth. This is a warning for all parents of athletes, of any kind, of any school and of any age - Have your child screened for heart problems! It is simple, it is easy and it is affordable.

Although we do not know if Reggie Garrett died of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, we do know this; what would it hurt to screen your child for heart problems or issues? We also know that if Zachary Schrah had been screened for heart problems, his life might have been spared and he might be here to tell us about SCA.

This week alone Karen Schrah has been on all three TV stations in Dallas/Fort Worth reliving her tradegy; the death of her son, Zachary. Karen Schrah started the Living4Zachary Organization to raise awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Youth and athletes and help other parents from going through what she went through.

One of the Lucky Ones..

I am sure that no one at Central Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon thought that anything would be different about their Friday Night football game. To much amazement; it was very different.

Running back Hayward Demison made the game winning touchdown; an average football game, an average Friday night, an average boy.....all of a sudden he told his coach he was having trouble breathing and then collapsed.

Often times Sudden Cardiac Arrest can just happen as it has gone up-detected for years. To everyone's surprise that night, there was a Cardiac Nurse in the crowd that night who came and started doing chest compressions on Hayward. Obviously everyone knew something was wrong, but not too many knew at that time that this was SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest); the result of a defective left coronary artery. This was a lifelong ailment that no one in the family knew about. Demison had complained of dizzy spells and shortness of breath several years back and had been diagnosed with asthma. Asthma wasn't the only thing he had.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest can just happen as the family of Zachary Schrah knows. One minute you are running, healthy and a vibrant young child, then the next minute - fighting for your life.
