Sunday, January 29th

Jan. 25, 2012

The Texas Legends, in partnership with THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano and the Living for Zachary Organization, will host a Living for Zachary Day at the Legends home game on Sunday, January 29th. Tip-Off is set for 2:30 p.m., with doors open at 1:30 p.m. Living for Zachary has teamed up with THE HEARTHOSPITAL and the Legends to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which is the silent killer that caused 16-year-old Zachary Schrah to collapse during a high school football practice in Plano on April 2, 2009.

Zachary’s mom, Karen Schrah, felt compelled to warn others about this silent killer. “Each year, thousands of young people and their families are affected by SCA,” says Karen Schrah, President and Co-Founder of Living for Zachary. “Living for Zachary is working to raise awareness by providing community education and AEDs to youth organizations.”

Zachary Troy Schrah was a fun-loving young man who lived each day of his short life to its fullest. Son of Troy and Karen Schrah, Zac grew up in Plano and loved football and baseball. As a sophomore at Clark High School, Zac played tackle on the JV offensive line at Plano East Senior High School. During 2009 spring training, he was called up to play Varsity during the 2009-10 season. Coaches admired his dedicated work ethic on and off the field. Off the field Zac was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved to ride four-wheelers.

Although he displayed talent in athletics, as a leader, in outdoor activities and even as a cook, Zac’s ultimate goal was to be a doctor. Sadly, Zac won’t be saving lives as a physician, but there is no doubt that his legacy through Living for Zachary will save many lives. Living for Zachary hopes to demonstrate the ideal
Zac described in an essay not long before he died – “Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out.”

Every 39 seconds someone in the United States dies from heart disease*, while sudden cardiac arrest claims one life every two minutes, taking more lives each year than breast cancer, lung cancer or AIDS**. Ten thousand young people die from SCA each year*.

Since 2009, THE HEART HOSPITAL has supported Living for Zachary by offering youth heart
screenings
and community education about sudden cardiac arrest. “THE HEARTHOSPITAL is proud to be a part of a group of advocates making a difference in the lives of others,” says Mark Valentine, president of THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano.
“With the Living for Zachary organization at the forefront we can help raise awareness and provide the resources needed to identify the signs of an oncoming
sudden cardiac arrest, and help save the lives of young victims.”

Be proactive this year and have your heart screened!

According to the American Heart Association Journals, (“Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics—2011 Update) 1 in 9 death certificates in the U.S. mentioned heart failure. Now- more than ever, it is crucial to understanding the condition of your heart and heart warning signs in case an emergency strikes.

Although various heart conditions have different symptoms, warning signs of heart issues can be the same. Shortness of breath, frequent rapid heartbeats, extreme weakness can all be symptoms that should trigger you to visit your local doctor, or in some cases - the hospital.

This should go without saying; ignoring symptoms of heart issues can have devastating effects. While most heart conditions aren’t fatal in some actual heart conditions - some can be. Untreated heart issues can lead to long-term damage of the heart, and even other vital organs like your brain. Aside from physical damage, friends and family can be overwhelmed with worries and concerns.

Be proactive this year and take the initiative to get your heart screened before any symptoms arise. Make sure you know your body before it alerts you of sudden health concerns. At a time when many make New Year’s Resolutions, focus on your heart and ensure a lifetime of great memories with those whom you love. Get a Living for Zachary Heart Screening on February 17, 2012 4:00 to 8:00pm at the Omni Dallas Convention Center Hotel located at 555 S. Lamar Street in Downtown Dallas. Register Here!!

Do you know what Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy really is?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition or disease where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick. The heart muscle that is made thickened due to the HCM can make it harder for the heart to pump blood . Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can also affect the heart's electrical system.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can go undiagnosed, because many of those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy don't have any signs, until it's too late.  Many symptoms can be shortness of breath, and problems in the "electical system" of your heart - causing abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that can take your life.

Illustrations of a normal heart (left) and a heart with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Note that the heart walls (muscle) are much thicker (hypertrophied) in the HCM heart.    Source - Mayo Clinic

Most times - these heart conditions can be detected by a simple heart screening. You won't get this heart screening during a physical for school or average check up, not will insurance cover this type of heart screening.
