I didn't know, ... Did you?

Do you know basic facts about
Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is NOT a Heart Attack
Sudden Cardiac Arrest takes one life every two minutes
Did you know that membership to the Sudden Cardiac Awareness Association is free?
Sudden Cardiac Arrest takes more lives than Lung Cancer, Aids or Breast Cancer
70% of people don't perform CPR on a person that is arresting
Some healthy foods that you eat CAN interact with cardiac medications
Sudden Cardiac Arrest is an "electrical" problem
30/50% would more than likely survive if CPR and AEDs were used within minutes of a SCA collapse
1 in 200,000 high school athletes in the US will die suddenly, most without any prior symptoms
African Americans are more likely to die from SCA than Caucasians
Chances are you know someone, a friend, a co-worker, a neighbor that has known someone that has been struck by Sudden Cardiac Arrest
The very FIRST thing that you do when someone collapses is call 911

And did you know that the most important thing you can do to prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest is to have your heart screened? We encourage you to call 1-800-4BAYLOR today to schedule a Living for Zachary screening for your child today!  Know your facts about Sudden Cardiac Arrest and read the Frequently Asked Question on Living for Zachary.

A Mother's Thank you for the Living for Zachary Heart Screening

All mother's are grateful but never more grateful than Irving High School Forensics Teacher - Vikki Rose. Vikki knew that there were heart problems in her family and had dreaded the day that they may show up - especially in her children. With her husband suffering from a heart attack several years ago - she knew it was time to take the plunge and find out.

Vikki Rose was informed of the Living for Zachary Heart Screening Forum that was held on February 17th - the night before the big Living for Zachary HeartBeats Gala so she decided to register her 18 year old son, Garrett Rose for the heart screening. She knew that with Garrett being so involved in Pole Vaulting that it was imperative to keep up with his health, especially since he would be attending Sam Houston State University in the Fall on a Track and Field Scholarship. She wanted to know if there was any underlying heart problems before sending him off on his new journey. With Garrett's father's history and his grandfather dying from a heart attack she wanted to have peace of mind so it was time to take the plunge and what better way that to get a Living for Zachary Heart Screening.

Vikki was so impressed with the process of the Living for Zachary Forum and how it was run - "I think that this is the best thing for all student's - whether or not they are in sports or not". "I wish all student's could have this done and would love for the heart screening to be something that a student HAS to have before participating in sports".

Of course, Garrett wasn't worried (not many kid's think that it can happen to them) so he was just excited to hear the good news. Last week a letter came in the mail stating that Garrett's heart was good and strong and working well. With Garrett's struggles over the years with his Dyslexia - she wanted a heart issue to be something that they conquered early on. With Garrett being the 2012 recipient of the Jack Singley award for the Irving Schools Foundation - getting a clean bill of health just gave Mother, Vikki Rose the peace that she needed to send Garrett off feeling nothing but peace and appreciation in her heart.
"Thank you Living for Zachary for giving me one less thing to worry about as a parent."

Congratulations to the 2012 Plano Independent School District Football Living for Zachary Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to the 2012
Plano Independent School District Football
Living for Zachary Scholarship Recipients

In 2011, Living for Zachary planned to give a $1,000 scholarship to a football player from each of the three Plano Independent School District Senior High Schools. Additionally, Living for Zachary planned to give a $1,000 L4Z scholarship to a trainer from Plano East High School annually.

The scholarship criteria for the Living for Zachary Football Scholarship is not academic, or talent, but more one of character, attitude and integrity in a student. Coach Bryan McCord, from Carpenter, wrote the following to Karen Schrah about her son Zachary Schrah - and essentially is the criteria for the Living for Zachary award.

"I wanted to let you know, what a blessing it was to have Zac as part of my life for 2 years at Carpenter. As a young coach, Zachary Schrah gave me the opportunity to see what a true hard working, role model looked like. Because of Zac's display of integrity, honesty, respect and love for the game and life, I am now able to hold all my athletes to higher standards for that I am extremely thankful"
- Coach Bryan McCord
